A mother who allegedly abused her baby, allegedly while she was on maternity leave, has died in hospital, authorities said.
Maao Sanbi, 29, was arrested last week after police said she allegedly beat her two-month-old son, who was born with a head injury, and tried to throw him into a tree.
A baby girl was also allegedly taken away by the mother, who later died in the hospital.
Police have charged Ms Sanbi with the child abuse charge, and the child welfare authority is investigating her case.
“This is a tragic case of child abuse and negligence,” said Dr Ailbhe Paddy, a medical officer at the Royal Hospital in Kildare.
Ms Sanbi has denied the charges, saying she is a victim of domestic violence.
She is due to appear in court on July 14.
She was taken to the Royal Irish Mounted Police Hospital in Kilkenny last week.
Earlier this month, police in the Irish Republic were called to an apartment in Kilkelly, Co Mayo, where the mother was staying with her two young children.
At the time, the mother’s children were said to be sleeping peacefully inside the apartment.
Irish authorities are also investigating whether Ms Sanb may have committed suicide, as the Irish Times reported.
The case has prompted a series of complaints from people who have suffered domestic violence in the past.
